Our solar system is only a small part of a host of stars gathered in a form discoid called the Milky Way. We are located at a point on the edge of this disc, slightly up on the close of the disc. But it seems that very soon we will move towards the bottom of the disc. This change, from top to bottom, also started its December 21, 2012. In fact, on this date, the ecliptic of our solar system will intersect the galactic plane, also called the "galactic equator of the Milky Way." In other words we are just at a point where galactic gravity is the maximum power.
